Dear Friend

None of us can avoid the odd negative thought that pops into our minds from time to time, but I’ve discovered that what I do with that thought makes a big difference to my stress levels. David Oliver’s article ‘3 words to help you feel less stressed’ focuses on where the battle against the ill effects of stress is so often won or lost – the mind. Do take a couple of minutes to read it.

Enjoy this issue of E-family!

3 words to help you feel less stressed

There are three words I say to myself when I start to feel stressed. Let me tell you what they are...

Catch – Challenge – Change

Our stress-triggers usually come from outside and make us think certain things, feel certain things and do certain things. The key is to catch, to challenge and to change that first thought...

Marriage – the early years

Dianne and I have been married for 37 years, and yet I can still remember those early years together as if it were yesterday. As well as the romance and the fun, the first few years of marriage are not without their challenges – getting used to someone else’s way of living can take a bit of getting used to.

A couple will often have differing expectations of what married life will be like. You somehow believe that the early years will be so romantic – perfect even – but for every couple reality soon kicks in; the mundane chores still have to be done, and you may discover you have very different ways of doing things.

Here’s an article on Care for the Family’s Looking at Life website for 20s and 30s on working through the early years of marriage to build a relationship that lasts.

E-family survey – your questions answered

Thank you once again to everyone who responded to the survey we ran about E-family back in June. We were asked some questions which we thought other people might be asking as well, so we’ve decided to answer them in this issue:

1: How do I get E-family sent to others?

Simply encourage your friends and family to sign up for E-family at www.careforthefamily.org.uk/e-family or you can use the ‘Tell-a-friend’ button at the top of E-family if you just want to show them a copy.

Allowing teenagers to soar

When it comes to parenting teenagers, it can be hard to let go of the reins and allow them to grow into independent young adults. We can learn so much from the Golden Eagle as she teaches her young to fly. I explain more in this issue’s Family Matters audio clip.    Listen here

I’ll be presenting ‘Teenagers! What Every Parent Has to Know’ in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Carlisle, Ballymena, Stoke-on-Trent, Northampton and Brightonyou can find out more here.
